Back at home—after greatly surprising his daughters with both his presence and plush toys and tiny purses from the airport—the girls were sent away to play with their presents while he dived into another hushed argument with Natalie. Not that argument was exactly the right word for what occurred. He said very little, and while Natalie was upset, she wasn’t angry. She’d never been a foam-finger-waving fan of his line of work, but her distaste for the danger had only grown with the birth of each of her children and her decline in financial independence.

Fortunately, she ran out of steam quickly, clearly more grateful that he was home than upset that he was late, and they were all summoned to the dining room to say grace and eat a delicious beef casserole. It was nice, it was warm, and it was devastating. There was a man who wouldn’t be going home to his family tonight, and Jason tried not to imagine what this room would look like right now if Natalie had been the one to get that dreadful call instead. Warm, yellow, illuminated by candlelight would be replaced by stagnant blue, the shadows hard to swim through, and muffled sobs coming from the rooms above.

He was distracted through dinner, his daughter’s stories of school and backyard worms barely registering. Natalie noticed, and instead of scolding Jason for not paying attention, she took the girls to bed early and left her husband to sit and finish dinner alone.

When she returned after a lengthy story-time session, she found Jason crouched on the living room floor, surrounded by the carefully labeled plastic storage tubs that usually occupied the basement. He was flipping through a large hardback book at a maddening pace, and Natalie approached cautiously, perching her dainty body on the arm of the family-sized couch.

“Jason, honey, what are you doing?” she inquired, keeping her voice steady.

“I’m looking through my yearbooks.”

“Why?”

“There’s this name. Clarence Dixon Jr., I recognize it from somewhere, but I can’t find it. I thought maybe I went to school with him, and that’s why he knew me, but I can’t find him. His pictures online don’t ring a bell either.”

Natalie pressed a worried hand to her decolletage. “Jason, what’s going on?”

Jason looked up at his wife and realized he’d said too much. “Nothing, honey. Just something to do with my dad’s case.”

“Jason, does someone dangerous know who you are?”

Jason stayed silent.

“Is our family in danger?” she asked in a hushed tone, looking up the stairs behind her for peeping faces between the banisters.

Though it pained him to admit it, Jason nodded. “Maybe, honey, maybe. But don’t worry. Please don’t worry. I’ll make arrangements. The CIA will keep you safe, I promise.”

“Will we have to leave our home?” She analyzed her husband’s face and closed her eyes, moving her hand to her forehead. “What about school?”

“It’s only temporary.”

“And what about you?” she asked, moving both hands to her lap and balling the fabric of her skirt into her fists. “Are you going to come with us?”

He shook his head.
